Pittsburgh-based Highmark has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by University of Pittsburgh Medical Center that claims Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System conspired to destroy UPMC, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
UPMC sued Highmark and West Penn in May. In the motion, Highmark said every antitrust complaint must "at minimum make economic sense." The payor said UPMC's claim that it is a powerless victim of Highmark and West Penn is illogical since UPMC is a "$10 billion integrated global health enterprise" with double-digit revenue growth, according to the report.
A UPMC spokesperson could not be reached for comment in the report.
West Penn also has a three-year-old lawsuit against UPMC, claiming the health system stifled competition.
