Two employees at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., were stabbed by a patient Oct. 1, according to police.
The Saratoga Springs Police Department said in a statement on its Facebook page that it responded to the incident on the morning of Oct. 1 and that the victims are employees of the hospital. The workers, identified as nurses by the hospital, had visible injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
Police said they have identified a suspect, and criminal charges are expected.
A statement from the hospital shared with Becker's states that the patient accused of carrying out the stabbing continues to receive care, and both nurses have been treated and released.
"First and foremost, we would like to acknowledge the skill and professionalism of our team who worked quickly to mitigate the situation," its statement reads.
"Our first priority has been and continues to be providing a safe work environment where our staff is providing care to our community. We have consistently provided training exercises and opportunities focused on workplace violence preparedness and have been planning implementation of an armed assailant training exercise. It is because of this focus on training and proactive readiness that our staff across departments was able to act quickly to support their colleagues and patients."
The police also praised the hospital's staff.
"We are thankful that the staff members at Saratoga Hospital are expected to make a full recovery and we commend the staff working this morning who provided exceptional emergency medical care to their partners as well as the suspect during this stressful event," police said.
Saratoga Hospital is part of Albany (N.Y.) Med Health System.
