2 medical suppliers convicted in $3.8M fraud scheme

Two medical equipment suppliers were convicted of healthcare fraud with a scheme worth $3.8 million, according to the Justice Department.

Meik Medical Equipment and Supply owner Ikechukwu Udeokoro, 47, and the company's manager, Ayodeji Fasonu, 56, billed Medicaid and Medicare "for hundreds of expensive patient support systems that were never provided to patients or caregivers," according to a Feb. 7 news release.

Instead of providing devices to help lift patients to nursing homes as promised, Mr. Udeokoro and Mr. Fasonu delivered "recliner chairs that had a seat lift feature" — a difference that let them pocket $2.4 million from 2010 to 2014, according to the Justice Department.

They both face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
