State Approves Backus Hospital, Hartford HealthCare Affiliation

The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Conn., and Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare have received state approval on a proposed affiliation.

The Connecticut Office of Health Care Access has authorized a certificate of need to form a partnership, which means Backus and Hartford Hospital's regional care network can now create an integrated healthcare delivery system.

The partnership agreement includes a capital commitment to support carrying out a new strategic plan in the east region of the state. Other provisions involve an ongoing fund for medical staff development, commitment to a Backus trauma center and the establishment of an extensive primary and ambulatory care network. Specific financial details were not disclosed.

As part of the affiliation, Backus President and CEO David Whitehead will become CEO of the Hartford HealthCare East Region, including Backus and Windham Hospital in Willimantic, Conn. Mr. Whitehead will also serve as senior vice president of Hartford HealthCare.
