Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., and Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, N.J., have completed their merger, forming a hospital with 965 beds across the two campuses.
Somerset Medical Center has been renamed Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, according to a news release. The Somerset Medical Center Foundation is not part of the merger and will continue to function independently, albeit under a new name — Somerset Health Care Foundation. RWJ University Hospital has pledged to award the Foundation $1 million annually for three years. RWJ University Hospital is the flagship of Robert Wood Johnson Health System, which encompasses five hospitals.
"For more than a century, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital has been committed to improving the health of central New Jersey," Stephen K. Jones, president and CEO of RWJ University Hospital and Robert Wood Johnson Health System, said in the release. "Our expansion into Somerset County will provide direct access to the highest-quality medical services and a wider array of healthcare opportunities, allowing us to better serve our communities and neighbors."
RWJ University Hospital and Somerset Medical Center signed a definitive merger agreement this past October. As part of the merger, Ken Bateman, president and CEO of Somerset Medical Center, and seven other members of the hospital's executive team have voluntarily stepped down. Vincent Joseph, executive vice president of RWJ University Hospital, is serving as interim site administrator following Mr. Bateman's departure.
