Des Moines-based Iowa Health System and Peoria, Ill.-based Methodist Health Services have finalized their partnership agreement, making Methodist the eighth affiliate of the system, according to an IHS news release.
Under the agreement, IHS has committed to invest $175 million into strategic capital initiatives for Methodist. Methodist will retain it board of directors and its local leadership team, and employee status will not change.
Bill Leaver, president and CEO of 26-hospital IHS, says Methodist is a natural strategic partner.
"Peoria is a fairly significant population center that is contiguous to one of our markets in the Quad Cities. We're looking at a long-term future centered around population health, and spreading our wings geographically to cover more population makes sense," Mr. Leaver says.
Mr. Leaver also said IHS' decentralized governance model played a large part in Methodist's attraction to the system.
"Part of what intrigued and persuaded Methodist to affiliate is that our model is very decentralized. There is a lot of local control and governance. The assets Methodist has earned and accumulated will remain in that community to serve people in that community," Mr. Leaver says.
