The total number of healthcare mergers and acquisitions hit a record high in 2018, and there were more than 400 deals announced in the third quarter of this year.
Here are 11 transactions involving hospitals and health systems that were announced, finalized or moved forward in the past three weeks:
1. Lehigh Valley Health Network acquires Coordinated Health
Lehigh Valley Health Network acquired the assets of Coordinated Health, including the system's two hospitals.
2. Adventist Health to take over 20th California hospital
Roseville, Calif.-based Adventist Health will take over management of Dameron Hospital in Stockton, Calif., on Jan. 1.
3. Rural Minnesota hospital to join HealthPartners
RC Hospital & Clinics, a rural system in Olivia, Minn., will become the eighth hospital in HealthPartners' network.
4. Temple will sell Fox Chase Cancer Center
Philadelphia-based Temple University signed a binding definitive agreement to sell the Fox Chase Cancer Center and its bone marrow transplant program to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
5. Los Angeles hospital joins PIH Health
Good Samaritan Hospital, a 408-bed hospital in Los Angeles, joined Whittier, Calif.-based PIH Health network.
6. Philadelphia hospital sells for $50M
West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health and Drexel University completed the $50 million acquisition of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia on Dec. 15.
7. Tenet to sell 2 Tennessee hospitals as part of $350M deal
Tenet Healthcare, a 65-hospital chain based in Dallas, entered into a definitive agreement Dec. 12 to sell its hospitals and other facilities in the Memphis, Tenn., area to Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.
8. 4 Chicago hospitals in talks to combine
The following four hospitals based in Chicago are in talks to merge into one organization: Advocate Trinity Hospital, Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, South Shore Hospital and St. Bernard Hospital.
9. RWJBarnabas, St. Peter's Healthcare System explore merger
St. Peter's Healthcare System, a Catholic hospital system in New Brunswick, N.J., is exploring a merger with West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health.
10. Rural Colorado hospital looks to SCL Health for financial stability
Craig, Colo.-based Memorial Regional Health is in negotiations with Broomfield, Colo.-based Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System about a potential alliance that could include SCL Health leasing, owning or operating the 25-bed rural hospital.
11. UF Health to acquire 2-hospital system in Florida
Gainesville, Fla.-based UF Health will acquire Central Florida Health, a two-hospital system in Leesburg, Fla.
