Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Conn., has become the first hospital in the state to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network, according to a Hartford Courant report.
Here are five things to know about the arrangement.
1. As part of the network, Middlesex Hospital physicians will be able to consult with experts at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic.
2. Specifically, Middlesex Hospital CEO Vincent Capece Jr. said hospital staff will be able to participate in "e-consult" services for patients, where physicians can seek suggestions from Mayo Clinic Care Network experts on patient care, according to the report.
3. The program will not bring Mayo Clinic physicians to Middletown. However, llocal physicians and experts will be able to communicate directly, so written opinions and consultations can become part of a patient's medical record, according to the Hartford Courant.
4. The move is not a step toward a buyout or a merger, Mr. Capece told the Hartford Courant. Middlesex Hospital will remain independent.
5. Middlesex Hospital joins the already more than 80 hospitals in 21 states with a subscription to the Mayo Clinic network.
