What do physicians need to transform to value-based healthcare?

Primary care physicians pointed to strong organizational leadership and meaningful incentive pay as the top two requirements for physician organizations to successfully transform from volume to value-based systems of care, according to a survey by Zolo Healthcare Solutions.

The survey analyzed responses from more than 12,000 physicians across 10 physician organizations, each in the process of implementing value-based care programs.

The results of the survey indicated the following factors are the most common among physician organizations implementing value-based care:

  • Financial incentives of at least 10 percent of total compensation are needed to change behavior among primary care providers, with preferred percentages between 20 and 25 percent.
  • Leaders proactively voice the importance of value-based programs for improving quality and reducing costs to patients, payers and regulators.
  • Organizations implementing value-based care understand that a successful, complete transformation can take years and require continual adjustment.
  • Many organizations stress the opportunity for rewards for the whole group practice as a strategy to avoid conflicts associated with financial incentives to individual physicians.
  • Physicians across the board recognize the importance of supporting value-based healthcare through the creation of case management systems for chronic disease, catastrophic cases, discharge planning and patient education.
