Fox News creates memorial scholarship for Dr. Charles Krauthammer

Fox News partnered with the National Merit Scholarship Program to create a memorial scholarship for former contributor Charles Krauthammer, MD, the network announced Sept. 13.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Dr. Charles Krauthammer Memorial Scholarship will be made eligible to children of Fox News and Fox Business Network employees beginning in 2020.

2. All winners will receive a $2,000 per year award for their four-year college education. To be eligible, students must be planning to enter college in fall 2020, take the 2018 PSAT/NMSQT test and meet additional academic requirements set forth by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarship applications will be accepted through March 31, 2019, and winners will be announced during spring 2020.

3. Dr. Krauthammer, a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and author, worked as a Fox News contributor from 2002 until his death earlier this year. He also worked as syndicated columnist for The Washington Post from 1984 until his passing.

4. A graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Dr. Krauthammer went on to acquire his medical degree from Boston-based Harvard Medical School. Just after completing his first year, Dr. Krauthammer suffered a blow to the head that severed his spinal cord and left him paralyzed from the neck down. However, he continued his education while at the hospital and graduated on time, according to his June 21 obituary in The New York Times.

5. Dr. Krauthammer won several awards during his journalism career, including the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, the 2013 William F. Buckley Award for Media Excellence and the 1984 National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticisms.
