Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center of Lebanon, N.H., have sought federal approval to jointly manage Medicare patients in Vermont through the development of an accountable care organization, according to a report by Vermont Public Radio.
The ACO would be called "OneCare Vermont." If the project is approved by CMS, OneCare would begin to enroll around 100,000 Medicare patients in Vermont on Jan. 1, 2013.
Experts say the decision by two academic medical centers to join together instead of competing is a step forward for healthcare reform in the state, according to the report.
