CMS announced the results from the initial five-year Physician Group Practice Demonstration yesterday, deeming the care-coordination program's results "positive" and extending it by another two years from Jan. 2011, according to a CMS news release.
In the demonstration, 10 physician groups could earn incentive payments based on the quality of care they provided and the estimated savings they generated in Medicare expenditures. In order to receive those incentive payments, physician had to meet the quality performance benchmark set in place for their respective group by CMS.
In the demonstration's fifth year, seven groups achieved benchmark performance on all 32 performance measures. These groups are: Billings (Mont.) Clinic; Everett (Wash.) Clinic; Forsyth Medical Group in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa.; Middlesex Health System in Middletown, Conn.; Park Nicollet Health Services in St. Louis Park, Minn.; and St. John’s Health System in Springfield, Missouri.
Four of the groups will split $29.4 million in incentive payments based on this 2010 performance. The next two years of the program will be called the PGP Transition Demonstration, and the same 10 physician groups will continue to participate.
