2 top Wayne State U medical school leaders to step down

Two executive leaders with the Detroit-based Wayne State University School of Medicine will step down from their posts later this year, university president M. Roy Wilson, MD, announced Jan. 31, according to Crain's Detroit Business.

Four things to know:

1. In a Jan. 30 email to faculty, Dr. Wilson said medical school Dean Jack Sobel, MD, and David Hefner, vice president of health affairs at Wayne State, will leave this year, the report states. It is unclear when exactly Dr. Sobel and Mr. Hefner plan to leave.

2. Dr. Sobel, 77, was named interim dean of the medical school in November 2014 and has since signed a series of contracts to remain as head of the institution. Mr. Hefner began his tenure at Wayne State in June 2015 to provide financial assistance to the University Physician Group, which filed for bankruptcy in November 2018.

3. Dr. Wilson said a national search for a new medical school dean will begin soon, and that individual will also hold the title of vice president of health affairs. The search committee will comprise representatives from the university's other health sciences colleges and leadership from Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, which Wayne State is negotiating a partnership deal with.

4. Dr. Sobel and Mr. Hefner will remain in their positions until a successor is named.
