West Penn Interim CEO Holds Onto Post Despite Expired Contract

Keith Ghezzi, MD, the interim CEO of Pittsburgh-based West Penn Allegheny Health System, still holds his position despite his contract expiring yesterday, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

Last week, as part of his testimony for health insurer Highmark's lawsuit against West Penn, Dr. Ghezzi said he and West Penn's board had considered a change in management once the interim CEO's contract expired Nov. 6.

Possibilities discussed included Dr. Ghezzi remaining as interim CEO, leaving or transitioning to a new position within the system.

Dr. Ghezzi's contract with West Penn is through consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal, which is based in New York. A contract provision allows Alvarez & Marsal to continue providing management services until West Penn reaches a final decision on the contract renewal, according to the report.
