Senate confirms Dr. Stephen Hahn as FDA chief

Stephen Hahn, MD, is set to become the next FDA commissioner after the Senate voted Dec. 12 to confirm him, STAT reported.

Dr. Hahn, who was nominated by President Donald Trump in September, will become commissioner at a time when the FDA faces bipartisan criticism for failing to stop youth vaping.

He was confirmed by a vote of 72-18.

He will take the reins from Ned Sharpless, MD, who has served as acting commissioner since Scott Gottlieb, MD, resigned in April.

A practicing radiation oncologist, Dr. Hahn was most recently CMO of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
