Obama, Bill Gates + 3 other leaders on their top business book picks

Some of the world's most successful leaders have one thing in common in terms of their daily routine: They're all avid readers.

CNBC compiled a list of book recommendations successful leaders and businessmen — including former President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and several others — made in 2018.

Here are five leaders on their top picks for books about business, career and leadership:

1. Mark CubanThat's What She Said by Joanne Lipman.

Mr. Cuban said Ms. Lipman's book provides "amazing insights" to help executives recognize workplace issues, communication challenges and possible solutions, according to CNBC.

2. Arianna HuffingtonThe Myth of the Nice Girl: Achieving a Career You Love Without Becoming a Person You Hate by Fran Hauser.

Ms. Huffington said the book redefined the "outdated notion of what powerful leaders should look like and shows how a culture in which we no longer allow brilliant jerks to dominate the workplace will be better not just for women, but for everyone — and for the bottom line," CNBC reports.

3. Bill GatesBad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou.

Mr. Gates said the book, which chronicles the rise and fall of blood-testing startup Theranos and its founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes, offers a number of lessons any company can learn, from scaling a startup properly to building an appropriate board of directors who will point out red flags.

4. Barack ObamaThe New Geography of Jobs by Enrico Moretti.

Despite having read the book roughly six years after it was initially published in 2012, Mr. Obama said Mr. Moretti's book offers "a timely and smart discussion of how different cities and regions have made a changing economy work for them — and how policymakers can learn from that to lift the circumstances of working Americans everywhere."

5. Richard BransonNew Power by Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms.

The billionaire founder of Virgin Group said he favors the book because it provides valuable insight for those who "want to understand how the world is changing, [and] what's really happening and how we can all find our way." Mr. Branson also noted the authors offer an interesting perspective on how business has changed and how leaders can more successfully spread ideas or start a movement.
