Swedish Medical Center in Seattle recently alerted employees that it's losing $250,000 a day and that system workforce reductions are likely, according to a Seattle Times report.
In a memo to physicians and volunteers that was cited in the report, Swedish CEO Kevin Brown said the hospital has seen patient volumes and revenues much lower than projected. So far this year, patient volumes across the Swedish system are 8 percent lower than expected — less than they were one year ago.
A hospital spokesperson said Swedish will "need to make some very difficult decisions in the next few weeks," according to the report. Staffing is expected to be reduced to match current patient volumes.
The system has roughly 11,000 employees.
