Jackson Health System and the University of Miami are refining a plan that would redefine the public health system and medical school's relationship and make way for physicians from Florida International University to practice at Jackson Memorial, according to a Miami Herald report.
Under the new agreement, Jackson would pay the University of Miami to "lease" a certain number of its physicians who would practice exclusively at Jackson, and Jackson would bill for their services, according to the report. The deal would be a departure from the two's current deal in which Jackson pays UM $115 million annually for treating its uninsured patients. UM physicians also treat insured patients at Jackson facilities, but bill for those services directly.
The deal would also give non-UM physicians, such as faculty from Florida International University's new medical school, the opportunity to practice at Jackson Memorial. FIU physicians currently practice at Jackson North, where they are salaried employees, according to the report.
Jackson and the University of Miami still need to finalize the agreement.
