Biden to direct federal agencies to advance women's health research

President Joe Biden is expected to sign an executive order March 18 to expand and improve research on women's health.

The executive order, which the president and first lady Jill Biden, EdD, plan to announce at a White House Women's History Month reception, directs federal agencies to "integrate women's health across the federal research portfolio" and "prioritize investments in women's health research," the White House said in a fact sheet

The executive order also further directs HHS and the National Science Foundation to study ways to leverage artificial intelligence to advance research on women's health; will "galvanize new research on women's midwife health"; and directs the Office of Management and Budget and the Gender Policy Council to assess unmet needs to support research on women's health, according to the White House.

The signing of the executive order comes after Mr. Biden announced in his March 7 State of the Union address that the White House is launching an Initiative on Women's Health Research to be led by Dr. Biden, and called on Congress to pass his plan for $12 billion for women's health research.

In addition to the executive order, federal agencies are also expected to announce March 18 new actions to promote women's health research, including the launch of a National Institutes of Health-wide effort that will initially be supported by $200 million from NIH beginning in the 2025 fiscal year, according to the White House.
