Question: What did you notice about your healthcare experience the last time you were at the receiving end as a patient?

Tim McGill: I observed focus on the details of consent, my health history, the patient identifier process and the repetition it takes to reduce human error. I was impressed.

Q: All healthcare is local. What about your market influences your organization's business or operations most?

TM: I am responsible for the operations of a community/regional hospital. We serve multiple counties. Our employees also live in these counties. What makes this unique, is our employees often care for friends, neighbors, fellow church members, even relatives because of our setting. This increases the challenge and the need for great insight into the “patient experience” and reduction of harms.

Q: How do you see the barrier between competitors and collaborators changing?

TM: Our local community-based “Readmission Coalition” is an example of working side-by-side with health care agencies toward a common goal - keeping patients healthy and to decrease readmissions. This has been more about rapport and engagement by all groups than anything else. And it has worked; we have gradually had success in turning around our readmission percentages. I don’t know if this could have been accomplished 10 years ago.
