Question: What's one lesson you learned early in your career that has helped you lead in healthcare?

Tracey Moffatt: Always be watchful for talented, energetic problem solvers and find a path forward for them to retain them as long as you can. Develop and coach them. If necessary create new positions if needed (it won’t break a large organization to add an FTE!). Having a great team makes leading through the challenging and ever-changing healthcare arena easier and more fun.

Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?

TM: I’m part of a few organizations that bring together SYSTEM level CNOs for large health systems a few times a year. I always, always learn from my colleagues who share some of my same challenges. (And its also one of the few places I can let my hair down with peers who do what I do – so that makes it enjoyable as well as educational). I also like talking with people leading other industries that face some of the same challenges we do in healthcare – shortages of skilled labor, responding to industry changes, etc.

Q: What do you see as the most exciting opportunity in healthcare right now?

TM: I really think we are primed to see a huge spike in artificial intelligence in healthcare. In the next 5 years, I truly believe we could see a lot of diagnostic studies interpreted (with even greater accuracy) by computers. I also love the explosion of telehealth/virtual health services that have become a reality in the past 5 years and I think we can take that to the next level of providing more and more home visits virtually. For small communities to have access to the best specialty services in the country through a virtual visit…wow…that’s a game-changer!
