Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, Vt., said it would lay off 16 employees after seeing millions of dollars in operating losses, according to a report on VTDigger.org.
Here are four things to know about the layoffs.
1. Eight of the 16 jobs cuts affect registered nurses, according to PMC spokesman Ron Hallman. Mr. Hallman said more than 20 other nursing positions are available at PMC and all of the affected nurses will be offered another job, according to the report.
2. The eight other eliminated jobs include management and support staff. These affected employees received severance packages and have been encouraged to apply for about 40 other open jobs at the organization, Mr. Hallman said, according to the report.
3. The layoffs are part of the organization's restructuring process to make up for the financial losses, which have occurred over the last several years. Overall, PMC reported a loss of $11 million since fiscal year 2012 and is projecting another loss in the current fiscal year, according to the report. In fiscal year 2015 alone, the organization said it lost $7.36 million in its network of physicians' offices.
Al Gobeille, chairman of the Green Mountain Care Board, which regulates hospital budgets and reviews capital projects through a permit process for a certificate of need, attributed PMC's financial issues, in part, to the current healthcare payment system.
4. According to the report, the layoffs come less than a year after Lynn Boggs took over as CEO of PMC and about a year after the organization's nurses negotiated their first union contract.
