Virginia Commonwealth University Physicians Argue Over New Children's Hospital

Richmond-based Virginia Commonwealth University's meetings to discuss the construction of a new VCU-affiliated children's hospital announced last month have met resistance from area pediatricians who want the hospital to be unaffiliated with Richmond-based community health systems, according to a report from the Richmond Times Dispatch.

The community group Pediatricians Associated to Care for Kids opposes construction of a children's hospital that is part of an existing community health system. A $150 million gift contributed to the project by philanthropists Bill and Alice Goodwin will only be available if the construction of the children's hospital is completely independent, the group pointed out.

Additional meetings have been scheduled for August to discuss the project, which will not be open until 2019 if it moves forward.
