Virginia VA hospital gets new director in leadership shake up

Hampton (Va.) VA Medical Center has appointed Walt Dannenberg as medical director Aug. 5, ABC affiliate WTKR reported Aug. 5.

The previous director, the chief of staff and the chief of surgery at the center resigned after the Department of Veteran Affairs Office of Inspector General released a report detailing "widespread failures" related to surgical services and quality management processes.

The VA told WTKR the leadership departures were not directly related to the report.

The VA is working to address leadership changes, anesthesiologist shortage, staff morale and  allegations of retaliation while aiming to rebuild trust and accountability at the Hampton VA, according to a statement from Rep. Jen Kiggans, who initiated the investigation as chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations for the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. The VA told WTKR that they are working to complete these changes by December.
