New Jersey hospital welcomes Dr. Maria Brennan as chief nursing officer

Maria Brennan, DNP, RN, was named chief nursing officer at Newark, N.J.-based University Hospital, according to a Jan. 5 report in NJBiz. The announcement came just days after the healthcare system said Ed Jimenez will take on the role of president and CEO.

Mary Maples, who has been serving as interim president and CEO since March 2021, said she looks forward to the "fresh ideas and enthusiasm" Dr. Brennan will bring to the organization, noting Dr. Brennan's perspective is in line with the hospital's mission to "deliver exceptional care to every patient, every time."

Dr. Brennan, former president of the Organization of Nurse Leaders of New Jersey, consulted for many hospital systems and nursing agencies in New Jersey and New York and served as CNO at Camden, N.J.-based Lourdes Health System before accepting the new role at University Hospital. Previously, she was the CNO at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, N.J.

University Hospital is the only public acute care hospital in New Jersey and serves as the main teaching hospital for Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
