Axis Health System CEO Bern Heath, PhD, will retire after leading the Durango, Colo.-based health system for more than 19 years.
During Dr. Heath's tenure, Axis Health System built a state-licensed acute treatment unit for mental healthcare as well as three clinical facilities, according to the health system. The health system's crisis services were expanded, and Axis Health was designated a community mental health center by the state and a primary care community health center by the federal government during Dr. Heath's tenure.
Recently, Dr. Heath led the merger of the health system with Dove Creek, Colo.-based Frontier Community Health Clinic — expected to be finalized next year.
Dr. Heath's last day as CEO will be Jan. 3. The health system has appointed the health system's COO, Shelly Burke, to be his successor.
