Aria Health picks Dr. Jack Sariego to lead breast health program and perioperative services: 4 things to know

Philadelphia-based Aria Health has tapped Jack Sariego, MD, as head breast surgeon and medical director of both the breast health program and of perioperative services.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Sariego.

1. In his role, Dr. Sariego, who is fellowship trained in surgical oncology, will focus his clinical work on surgical cases, but is committed to a comprehensive breast health program that will cover all areas of breast health, focusing also on noncancerous treatments and working closely with other women's health specialties, according to Aria. Dr. Sariego's clinical practice will be based in the Torresdale area of Philadelphia, but he will oversee the breast health program at all three Aria campuses.

2. In addition to his role as medical director for breast health, Dr. Sariego will carry the title of medical director of perioperative services. In this role, he will streamline surgery, anesthesia and operating room schedules at each of Aria's campuses and coordinate processes across the health system.

3. Dr. Sariego has more than 25 years of surgical, administrative and military experience. Prior to joining Aria Health, Dr. Sariego served as professor of surgery and associate program director for surgery residency at Temple University in Philadelphia. The bulk of his clinical practice was at Philadelphia-based Jeanes Hospital, where he also held positions including chairman of surgery, director of medical education and associate director for perioperative services. He has also served as chairman of Surgery at Ocean Springs (Miss.) Hospital, the American College of Surgeons state chairman for trauma for the state of Mississippi, and spent 10 years in private practice in rural Mississippi.

Dr. Sariego holds a number of military titles, including general surgeon, flight surgeon and trauma/critical care specialist.

4. Dr. Sariego's appointment is the first of many steps Aria is planning in the expansion of its women’s health services. An additional breast surgeon will join the health system in the fall of 2015.
