The following hospital and health system CEO resignations were reported this year:
1. Doug Cropper is leaving his role as president and CEO of Davenport, Iowa-based Genesis Health System in June for a full-time leadership role with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kurt Andersen, MD, chief clinical officer/chief medical officer for Genesis, was selected as Mr. Cropper's successor.
2. Susan Turney, MD, the first CEO of Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System, will step down in September. Dr. Turney will continue to guide the health system through its proposed merger with Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health, according to a Dec.12 news release shared with Becker's. The two health systems announced their intent to join in October.
3. Kathy Donovan, MSN, RN, CEO of Children's Hospital of Michigan and Detroit Medical Center Group COO, is leaving the organization Dec. 23, according to a hospital statement shared with Becker's. Ms. Donovan was named DMC Group COO in November 2021 and has served as CEO of Children's Hospital of Michigan since 2020. She has accepted a new role as COO of Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System.
4. Anne Marie Lynch is no longer CEO of Anchorage, Alaska-based North Star Behavioral Health System. Employees were notified Nov. 29 via email that Ms. Lynch was stepping down "effective immediately" and moving to an Indiana hospital, according to the Anchorage Daily News, which obtained a screenshot of the email. North Star Behavioral Health System has four campuses, including North Star Hospital in Anchorage and Palmer (Alaska) Residential Treatment Center.
5. Caroline Wasielewski is no longer CEO of the healthcare district that owns Adventist Health Tehachapi (Calif.) Valley hospital. Ms. Wasielewski began leading the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District in 2020. Her last day as CEO was Nov. 25.
6. Claudio Fort resigned as president and CEO of Rutland (Vt.) Regional Medical Center. Mr. Fort will leave the hospital at the end of December, according to a news release shared with Becker's. Judi Fox, CFO and vice president of finance at Rutland Regional, was selected as interim president and CEO.
7. John Mentgen resigned as president and CEO of Scottsbluff, Neb.-based Regional West Health Services. The health system's COO, Amanda Vick, RN, was named acting president and CEO.
8. Ken Johnson resigned as president and CEO of Hutchinson (Kan.) Regional Healthcare System. Mr. Johnson had served at the helm since 2015. Jeff Egbert was selected as the interim CEO.
9. Michael La Coste is no longer CEO of Gonzales (Texas) Healthcare Systems. Mr. La Coste left the role after assuming it for about four months.
10. John Hill is no longer president and CEO of Bozeman (Mont.) Health. Kathryn Mertany, MD, was selected to serve as interim president and CEO beginning Nov. 1.
11. Arthur Kellermann, MD, resigned as health sciences senior vice president and CEO of Richmond, Va.-based VCU Health System. Marlon Levy, MD — chief medical officer of VCU Medical Center, chair of the division of transplant surgery and director of Hume-Lee Transplant Center — was selected as interim senior vice president and CEO.
12. Brian Nall, the CEO of North Country Hospital in Newport, Vt., resigned after medical staff took a no-confidence vote toward him. Hospital CFO Tracey Paul was selected as interim managing officer, according to a statement shared with Becker's Oct. 24 from Frank Knoll, chair of the hospital's board of trustees.
13. Matt Wenzel resigned as president and CEO of West Burlington, Iowa-based Great River Health. Michael McCoy, MD, the organization's chief medical officer, was named acting CEO.
14. Keith Gnagey stepped down as CEO of Teton Valley Health in Driggs, Idaho. He will continue to serve as a member of the Teton Valley Health board of directors.
15. Kerry Goff resigned as CEO of Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp, Ala. The hospital said an interim leader will be selected to take the helm.
16. Gary Caples left his role as CEO of Clyde, N.C.-based Haywood Regional Medical Center Oct. 14. He left the role to pursue new opportunities.
17. Brian Springate, BSN, RN, resigned as CEO of Andalusia (Ala.) Health. He accepted a role in Hazard, Ky., with a hospital affiliated with the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System.
18. Brett Antczak resigned as CEO of Leadville, Colo.-based St. Vincent Health. He left the role after about two years in it.
19. Marc Harrison, MD, left his role as president and CEO of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare to run a healthcare platform business for General Catalyst. The health system selected Rob Allen as the new president and CEO.
20. Scott Ellner, DO, resigned as CEO of Billings (Mont.) Clinic in August. He was named CEO in January 2020. The Billings Clinic board appointed Clint Seger, MD, interim CEO.
21. Florence Spyrow, MSN, stepped down in August as president and CEO of Flagstaff-based Northern Arizona Healthcare.
22. Warner Thomas left his position as president and CEO of New Orleans-based Ochsner Health to serve as president and CEO of Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health.
23. Larry Gray stepped down from his role as CEO of Seminole (Texas) Hospital District due to medical treatment and recovery commitments.
24. Wright Lassiter III left his role as president and CEO of Detroit-based Henry Ford Health to lead Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health. Henry Ford Health named Robert Riney CEO in September.
25. David Keith stepped down as CEO of McAlester (Okla.) Regional Health Center. He said he was considering running for state office. Shawn Howard, the hospital's vice president of operations, was named CEO.
26. Rex Jones stepped down from Magnolia (Ark.) Regional Medical Center in April to serve as CEO of the Arkansas Rural Health Partnership, a nonprofit formed in 2008 to improve healthcare delivery in rural Arkansas.
27. Richard Lofgren, MD, left his position as president and CEO of UC Health in Cincinnati to serve as CEO of Oklahoma City-based OU Health. He had helmed UC Health since 2013.
28. Salem (Mo.) Memorial District Hospital's board of trustees voted to terminate Kasey Lucas, its CEO who had led since January 2016, in February. Bill May was named interim CEO on site.
29. Gary Shaw, president and CEO of Nantucket (Mass.) Cottage Hospital, resigned in February. He said that with "COVID on the decline" and plans in place to improve health on the island, he had achieved his goals. Jeanette Ives Erickson, DNP, RN, chief nursing emerita at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital, was named interim CEO.
30. Maryann Reese, DHA, RN, resigned as president and CEO of Saint Francis Healthcare System in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The system's CFO Justin Davidson was named interim president. No reason was provided for Dr. Reese's departure.
31. Hornell, N.Y.-based St. James Hospital President and CEO Bryan O'Donovan stepped down in March. He took a new role as president and CEO of Lifetime Assistance Inc., a service provider for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
32. Paula Autry no longer serves as president and CEO of Jackson, Mich.-based Henry Ford Allegiance Health. The health system gave no reason for her departure.
33. Scott Wester stepped down as president and CEO of Baton Rouge, La.-based Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center after serving in the role since 2008. He took a new executive role with Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, focusing on governmental advocacy and its partnership with Louisiana State University.
34. Craig Thompson, MD, stepped down from his role as president and CEO of New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. During his nearly 12-year tenure, the health system expanded its care network and doubled its workforce.
35. Jason Barrett resigned as president and CEO of St. Augustine, Fla.-based Flagler Health+. Counsel Carlton DeVooght, chief administrative officer and general, was named interim president and CEO.
36. Carol Wolfenbarger left her role as CEO of Marion, N.C.-based Mission Hospital McDowell. Tonia Hale, CEO at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine, N.C., was named interim CEO. Both hospitals are under the umbrella of Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health, which is part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare.
37. Shane Cerone resigned as president and CEO of Chesterfield, Mo.-based St. Luke's Hospital to return to his home in Michigan. Gary Olson, former CEO at St. Luke's, returned in an interim role.
38. Steve Anderson stepped down as CEO of University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka in June to start a new private venture.
39. George Miller Jr. is no longer president and CEO of The Loretto Hospital or affiliated with the Chicago-based organization, following an FBI investigation into vaccines the hospital administered at his church. In March 2021, Mr. Miller was suspended for two weeks without pay amid reports of improper COVID-19 vaccinations from the safety-net hospital.
40. Philip Koovakada, MSN, left his role as president and CEO of St. Luke's Baptist Hospital in San Antonio to become senior vice president of Orlando Health southcentral region and president of Orlando Health-Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Fla.
41. Katrina Keefer stepped down as CEO of August (Ga.) University Health System in July. She began a new role as CEO of DCH Health System in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Aug. 1.
42. Timothy Babineau, MD, resigned as president and CEO of Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan in May, but stayed on with the health system as a consultant through September.
43. Ava Collins resigned as CEO of Framingham, Mass.-based MetroWest Medical Center, owned by Tenet Healthcare. Her resignation came about one week after the hospital announced plans to end outpatient oncology services later in the year.
44. Dan Slipkovich accelerated his retirement and stepped down as CEO of Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health to focus on family commitments. He remains an equity partner and advisor for the health system. Stuart McLean was named interim CEO.
45. Dean French, MD, left his role as CEO of Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Vt., to become chief medical officer of Louisville, Ky.-based ScionHealth.
46. William Jackson Jr., MD, stepped down as president and CEO of Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System by mutual agreement.
47. Mike Blauer resigned as administrator and CEO of Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier, Idaho. He said he accepted a hospital leadership position in his hometown of Burley, Idaho.
48. Kerry Trapnell is no longer CEO of Elbert Memorial Hospital in Elberton, Ga. The Elberton-Elbert County Hospital Authority voted to part ways with Mr. Trapnell in June after placing him on administrative leave for contributing $25,000 from hospital funding to a non-candidate, independent political action committee.
49. Rod Harkleroad, RN, stepped down as CEO of Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C., to serve as market president of HighPoint Health System, a market of Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint that spans middle Tennessee.
50. Jonathan Curtright, CEO of Columbia, Mo.-based MU Health Care, stepped down to join Oklahoma City-based OU Health as COO.
51. Joe Sluka abruptly resigned as president and CEO of Bend, Ore.-based St. Charles Health System after the health system announced it would lay off 105 caregivers and eliminate 76 vacant positions. Steve Gordon, MD, a former St. Charles board of directors member was named interim CEO.
52. Joshua Gilmore left his role as CEO of Iron County Medical Center in Pilot Knob, Mo., to begin a new position with a federally qualified health center in Alaska closer to his family's relatives. The hospital's former chief nursing officer, Cindy Sadler, BSN, RN, was named interim CEO.
53. Dr. Jason Studley stepped down as CEO of Greenwood (Miss.) Leflore Hospital. He resigned less than one month after the hospital began exploring a joint operating agreement with Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center.
54. Lynn Mergen stepped down as CEO of Medical Center Barbour in Eufaula, Ala., to take a new position as CEO of Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital in Warsaw, Ind.
