In the first seven months of 2023, CEO exits hit a 21-year high. The 100 moves that occurred within hospitals through July is nearing the 103 moves within hospitals that occurred through all of 2022, Becker's Kelly Gooch reports — and that trend appears to be continuing through August.
Becker's has covered 14 hospital and health system CEOs who resigned or announced retirements this month, up from eight in July:
1. Jeremy Zoch, PhD, left his role as CEO of Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif.
2. Ken Hunter, BSN, RN, is retiring as CEO of Kimball (Neb.) Health Services after 12 years in the role.
3. Marlow Hernandez, DO, founder and former CEO of Miami-based Cano Health, is stepping away from the company. Mark Kent, interim CEO since June, has been named permanent CEO.
4. Cindy Hecker, BSN, CEO of the Seattle-based University of Washington Medical Center, will retire in June 2024.
5. Sheryl Rickard is retiring as CEO of Bonner General Health in Sandpoint, Idaho, at the year's end. John Hennessy, the hospital's current CFO, will succeed her.
6. Terry Treadwell is leaving his role as CEO of Merit Health River Region in Vicksburg, Miss. Laurie Neely, MSN, the hospital's chief nursing officer, was named interim CEO.
7. Anthony Guaccio, president and CEO of Swedish Hospital in Evanston, Ill., will retire at the year's end.
8. Mark Sullivan will step down as president and CEO of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health on Aug. 31. Joyce Markiewicz, RN, the system's executive vice president and chief business development officer, will succeed him.
9. James Dover is stepping down as president and CEO of Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Health. The system joined Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Health in April.
10. Mark Keroack, MD, will retire as CEO of Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health in July 2024.
11. Keith Page will retire as president and CEO of Maryville, Ill.-based Anderson Healthcare in February 2024.
12. Richard Vath, MD, will retire as president and CEO of Baton Rouge, La.-based Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System in June 2024.
13. David Keith retired as CEO of Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, Alaska.
14. Gina Temple, PhD, RN, is no longer serving as CEO of HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson. Sally Seymour, CEO of HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital since 2022, was named interim CEO.
