John Koster, MD, is the president and CEO of Providence Health & Services in Renton, Wash., one of the nation's largest Catholic healthcare organizations. Dr. Koster joined Providence in April 1997 in a position with primary responsibility for system operations. He was named president and CEO in 2003.
As president and CEO, Dr. Koster led Providence Health & Services through its affiliation with Seattle-based Swedish Health Services in 2012. As a result of the affiliation, Dr. Koster contributes his leadership expertise to 32 hospitals, 350 physician clinics, senior services, supporting housing and many other health and education services. Dr. Koster has also maintained Providence's focus on providing for the needs of the communities it serves, especially for those who are poor and vulnerable. In 2011, Providence provided more than $651 million in community benefit, including nearly $204 million in free and discounted care.
Prior to joining Providence, Dr. Koster served as senior vice president of VHA in Irving, Texas, a nationwide network of healthcare organizations and physicians. He has held senior leadership positions at Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, N.M., and at Rocky Mountain Healthcare Company in Denver. He also practiced internal medicine for 10 years.
Dr. Koster is the immediate past chair of the VHA Board of Directors. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Koster received his medical degree from the University of New Mexico Medical School in Albuquerque. His internship was completed at Providence Hospital in Portland, Ore., and his residency in internal medicine was completed at University of New Mexico Medical School.
