Schenectady, N.Y.-based Ellis Medicine officially laid off 33 employees after closing its nursing home and rehabilitation center, according to a WARN notice filed Sept. 23 with the New York State Department of Labor.
A spokesperson for Ellis told Becker's that affected employees were offered positions elsewhere within the organization, and most accepted.
"Some people really have a nursing home calling and wanted to keep working in that industry. For these folks, we hosted multiple job fairs with 12 Capital Region nursing homes, as well as other job placement assistance," an Ellis spokesperson said in a statement. "Four of our employees opted to retire. The 33 total in the WARN notice reflects all of this."
In June, Ellis Hospital announced plans to close the facility, including an 82-bed nursing home, due to financial difficulties, according to the Times Union. Residents were moved out of the facility during the summer, with the facility officially closing Sept. 6, according to the WARN notice.
"Closing ERRC is a heart-wrenching decision, especially considering the excellent care our staff has provided over the years," Ellis Medicine President and CEO Paul Milton said in a June. "However, the underutilization of the 18-acre McClellan campus and the resulting financial burden have made it clear that we must always be evaluating where we focus our resources to remain viable in a challenging halthcare environment."
