The mayor of Belhaven, N.C., Adam O'Neal, said the town plans to buy the now-closed Pungo Hospital through eminent domain, according to WUNC, North Carolina Public Radio.
The hospital was closed last year by Greenville, N.C.-based Vidant Health, which is building a $5.5 million clinic in the town, according to the report. Mr. O'Neal says the clinic will not be equipped to handle emergency services, though Vidant's CMO says it is making investments for emergency transportation, according to the report.
Pantego Creek, a community board, currently owns the Pungo Hospital facility, according to the report, and its attorney said the town's eminent domain petition has yet to be filed.
