Americans donated more than $410 billion to charities in 2017, and health organizations received about $38.3 billion of those gifts, according to a report on philanthropy published by Giving USA.
Here are four report insights:
1. Charitable giving exceeded $400 billion in a single year for the first time in history.
2. Giving by individuals represented about 70 percent of total giving, followed by gifts from foundations (16 percent) and giving by bequest (8.7 percent).
3. Charitable giving to health organizations increased by 7.3 percent in the last year to $38.3 billion. Religion received the largest bulk of donations at $127.37 billion.
4. "Americans' record-breaking charitable giving in 2017 demonstrates that even in divisive times our commitment to philanthropy is solid. As people have more resources available, they are choosing to use them to make a difference, pushing giving over $400 billion," said Aggie Sweeney, chair of Giving USA Foundation.
