CHS revenue grows while admissions slump: 5 things to know

Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported net operating revenues of $4.9 billion for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015, up 2.5 percent from $4.8 billion for the comparable period of 2014.

Here are five things to know about the for-profit hospital operator's latest financial results.

1. Income from continuing operations attributable to CHS common stockholders increased to $117 million, or $1.01 per share (diluted), for the three months that ended June 30. That's up from $48 million, or $0.42 per share (diluted), for the same period of last year.

2. The for-profit hospital operator also posted strong financials for the six months that ended June 30. For that time period, CHS reported net operating revenues of $9.8 billion, up 9.5 percent from $8.9 billion for the same period of 2014.

3. During the six-month period that ended June 30, income from continuing operations attributable to CHS common stockholders increased to $209 million, compared with a loss from continuing operations attributable to CHS common stockholders of $42 million for the same period a year ago.

4. Admissions at CHS facilities decreased 2.2 percent in the second quarter of FY 2015 compared to the same period of 2014. When adjusted for outpatient activity, admissions were down 0.2 percent during the second quarter of this year.

5. Commenting on the for-profit hospital operator's second-quarter results, CHS Chairman and CEO Wayne T. Smith said, "Our ability to execute fundamental operating strategies in an evolving healthcare environment resulted in a solid financial and operating performance for the second quarter of fiscal 2015. We are pleased with the incremental improvement in operating revenues across our hospital network and our ability to drive higher earnings compared with the second quarter of last year."
