Beaumont, Henry Ford submit dueling plans for new hospital

Beaumont Health and Henry Ford Health System each want to build a new hospital in Oxford, Mich., but state regulators will allow only one hospital to be built.

Southfield, Mich.-based Beaumont Health submitted a certificate of need application with the state, seeking to build a 117-bed hospital in Oxford. Beaumont said the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will decide by July whether to approve the $140 million project.

Henry Ford Health System is also interested in building a hospital in Oxford. The Detroit-based health system submitted a plan to the state to build a $160 million, 116-bed hospital, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Only one of the systems will be allowed to build a hospital in Oxford due to a decision last year by the 11-member Michigan Certificate of Need Commission. The commission said Oxford is a "limited access area" that needs an additional 117 hospital beds to meet local residents' healthcare needs.

"So if Beaumont is approved for 117 beds, then there will not be any more need for beds at that time," a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services told the Detroit Free Press.

The spokesperson said Henry Ford Health System failed to submit an application that complied with certificate of need rules by the Feb. 1 deadline. However, the health system disputed that claim.

"We did in fact submit a [certificate of need] application by the Feb. 1 deadline, and are confident that the state will have strong interest in our approach to meeting the needs of the community," a spokesperson for Henry Ford Health System told the Detroit Free Press.
