Nurse practitioners and physician assistants who work in the western United States reported the highest median salaries in 2010, according to a nation survey conducted by ADVANCE for NPs & PAs.
For nurse practitioners, the top wages were paid in Texas, Montana, Alaska, California and Maryland. In the two best-paying states, Texas and Montana, nurse practitioners made a median annual salary of $110,000.
The best-paying states for physician assistants were Wyoming, Alaska, Delaware, Rhode Island and Texas. In the best-paying state, Wyoming, physician assistants made a median annual salary of $124,000.
The survey was conducted using online questionnaires created with Zarca Interactive's survey software. Data was collected from Aug. 23-Nov. 30, 2010. Nearly 3,000 NPs and nearly 1,300 PAs responded to the survey.
