CEOs of hospital districts usually have lower compensation packages than private, non-profit systems and for-profit hospitals, and in California, the median salary of a hospital district CEO in 2010 was $230,990, according to data from Payers & Providers.
Payers & Providers looked at the 2010 Form 990s of 36 hospital districts in California. The mean, or average, salary of California hospital district CEOs was $338,972, which was significantly higher than the median due to a couple outliers. Michael Covert of Palomar Health in Escondido earned $1.09 million, and Lee Domanico of Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae made a little more than $1 million — the only two hospital district CEOs in the state to have compensation top $1 million.
Terry Pena, the former interim CEO of Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall Rivers Mills, had the lowest salary at $102,417. Eleven of the 36 hospital district CEOs earned less than $200,000 in 2010.
