Orthopedic physicians receive the highest average incentive bonuses and pediatric specialists the lowest.
That's according to the "2023 Physician Compensation Report" from Physicians Thrive, which said that orthopedic specialists received an average of $126,000 in incentive bonuses compared with $28,000 for pediatricians in 2022.
For the first time in a decade, every specialty reported some form of incentive bonus, the report said. Individually, 57 percent of specialists reported earning such a bonus in 2022, with primary care providers notching an average incentive bonus of $33,500.
Here are 17 average incentive bonuses by specialty:
- Orthopedics/orthopedic surgery: $126,000
- Ophthalmology: $100,000
- Cardiology: $85,000
- Gastroenterology: $74,000
- Urology: $73,000
- Anesthesiology: $68,000
- Radiology: $66,000
- Pathology: $54,000
- Emergency medicine: $51,000
- OB-GYN: $49,000
- Physical medicine/rehabilitation: $48,000
- General surgery: $46,000
- Psychiatry: $33,000
- Family Medicine: $30,000
- Internal Medicine: $29,000
- Neurology: $29,000
- Pediatrics: $28,000
Orthopedic, cardiology, gastroenterology and urology specialists were also in the top five of 29 physician specialties ranked by annual compensation in the recent 2023 Medscape "Physician Compensation" report.
