The University of Alabama at Birmingham has begun renovations on its UAB Hospital University emergency department and expects to begin a $73 million expansion project in 2024.
Construction began in June with interior renovations that will create nine new exam rooms and a temporary waiting room space in the north pavilion, the system said in a July 10 news release. In August, it will begin installing two leased mobile treatment units that will provide 16 additional treatment spaces for patient care in early fall.
The emergency department expansion will include renovations to the first floor, turning the adjacent atrium into a clinical care space and constructing a three-story space. The project will add more than 66,000 square feet, 59 exam rooms and additional imaging capacity. Pending approvals from the board of trustees, construction will begin in 2024.
