Memphis, Tenn.-based Le Bonheur Children's Hospital will complete the $94 million expansion in May, Commercial Appeal reported March 8.
The 128,000-square-foot expansion will add 14 new beds, create a 31-bed cardiovascular unit, add new MRI-guided catheterization labs, expand surgery recovery areas and convert 12 beds to critical care, ABC affiliate WREG reported.
The patient rooms are designed to be larger than normal to improve patient and family comfort and allow medical professionals to perform operations at a moment's notice.
"These rooms are large enough for us to do just about any operation at the bedside if the need were to arise," Jason Johnson, MD, associate chief of cardiology at Le Bonheur, told the Appeal.
The construction is expected to wrap by May, and hiring and training new medical staff will extend through the rest of the year.
