Construction begins on New Jersey system's $3B expansion

Cooper University Health Care broke ground Jan. 28 on the first phase of its $3 billion "Project Imagine" health sciences campus expansion in Camden, N.J.

Announced in late 2022, the three-phase expansion aims to transform Cooper's Camden campus, home to Cooper University Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, Children's Regional Hospital and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.

The project features three new patient towers accommodating up to 745 beds, expanded surgical and interventional capacity, an emergency department and a bridge connecting to the cancer center, according to a news release.

It also includes a new regional medical coordination center, as well as additional surge capacity.

The first phase — a 10-story, 35,000-square-foot hospital tower connected by a bridge to the cancer center — is partially funded by an approximately $170 million state grant and is slated for completion by 2028.

Cooper is partnering with the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters and construction manager Torcon/P.Agnes according to the release.

The health system, which has more than 11,000 team members, expects the expansion to create thousands of construction jobs and, once completed, hundreds of permanent positions in healthcare and related fields.
