Cleveland Clinic opened the Fatima bint Mubarak Center at its Abu Dhabi location in the United Arab Emirates.
The center is modeled after Cleveland Clinic's Taussig Cancer Center in Cleveland. It has 32 exam rooms for multidisciplinary cancer consultation, 24 private infusion rooms, two procedure rooms, and an area devoted exclusively to women's oncology services. It employs 150 nurses, physicians and radiologists.
Cleveland Clinic said the Abu Dhabi cancer center will help eliminate the need for patients to go abroad for treatment and care, with cancer being the third most common cause of death in the UAE and the primary reason patients travel out of the region for medical services.
The center is named after H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, who is regarded as "the mother of the nation" by people across the UAE and serves as chairwoman of the General Women's Union, president of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood and supreme chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation. The name recognizes a "pivotal" gift, the amount of which is undisclosed, made from the UAE to Cleveland Clinic in her name.
Cleveland Clinic opened its Abu Dhabi location in 2015.
