Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care's accountable care organization was profiled today in the New York Times for its success at keeping patients out of the hospital — a goal of accountable care, but a big change from the traditional hospital business model.
Advocate operates ACOs for both Medicare and privately insured patients. The article points out that while care is coordinated, patients are not restricted to Advocate physicians.
According to the report, which discusses the system's various care coordination efforts, admissions have dropped 6 percent and days spent in the hospital are down 9 percent since the launch of the ACO.
