Boston Medical Center.Boston Medical Center is on track to emit zero greenhouse gases by 2020 after reducing energy use by 19.4 percent from the hospital's 2011 baseline. BMC opened a rooftop garden in June 2017 atop its power plant, and the approximately 15,000 pounds of crops produced there support the hospital's cafeterias and inpatient population, as well as its food pantry and demonstration kitchen. BMC also sources its seafood locally through a partnership with the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association, and 47 percent of its meat and poultry are raised without non-therapeutic antibiotics. The hospital's diversion efforts prevented 83 tons of food waste from going to landfills in 2016, earning BMC a Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth this year.
