University of Vermont Medical Center (Burlington). UVM Medical Center's green efforts date back to 1989 when a nurse started a recycling program on her unit. Now, the hospital boasts both a Green Team and a management-level Sustainability Council to create action plans and raise awareness about green healthcare within the hospital. Its 23,000-square-foot oncology facility became LEED Gold certified in 2010, and the hospital has instituted environmentally preferable purchasing, among other sustainability efforts.
