Yale-New Haven Hospital | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital. Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 1,541-bed academic medical center and flagship of Yale New Haven Health System. The hospital dates back to 1826, when it opened as the 13-bed General Hospital Society of Connecticut, the first hospital in the state and fourth voluntary hospital in the country. The hospital has a rich history, as it was a designated military hospital for years and cared for more than 25,000 soldiers during the Civil War.

Today, Yale-New Haven Hospital is the largest acute-care provider in southern Connecticut and is a major referral center in the Northeast. U.S. News & World Report named Yale-New Haven Hospital as the No. 1 hospital in the state and a top hospital in the country for 11 specialties, including cancer care, cardiology and gastroenterology. The hospital was named as one of the top 10 nonprofits for executive women by the National Association for Female Executives, earned Magnet designation for nursing excellence and received the Partner for Change with Distinction award from Practice Greenhealth, which recognizes healthcare facilities that have implemented a number of environmental programs.

The first X-ray was created by a Yale physicist in 1896 and that spirit of innovation persists. With its relationship to Yale School of Medicine and more than 500 research scientists who practice there, the hospital is also recognized as a hub for biomedical research and clinical advancements. For instance, Yale-New Haven Hospital is the only hospital in the state to offer bronchial thermoplasty, a breakthrough treatment for severe asthma. More recently, the hospital made headlines when its surgical teams performed an eight-patient, paired kidney transplant exchange — the first of its kind in Connecticut.
