 Oregon Health & Science University (Portland). Oregon Health & Science University, a 544-bed hospital established in 1974, is the state's only public academic health center.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Oregon Health & Science University as the top hospital in Oregon for 2013-14. The publication also named the hospital as one of the top 50 in the country for five specialties, including cancer, gynecology and diabetes.

The hospital has made several contributions to various specialties over the years. Oregon Health & Science University's Knight Cancer Institute, for instance, helped pioneer personalized medicine through a discovery that identified how to deactivate cells that enable cancer to grow without harming healthy ones. In 2014, the hospital's Knight Cardiovascular Institute became the first in the state, and among the first in the nation, to implant the smallest cardiac monitoring device available. In March, Oregon Health & Science University also announced the creation of its Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy to accelerate research and potential cures and treatments for Parkinson's disease.
