Weirton Medical Center, SEIU Reach Contract Deal

Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center and the Service Employees International Union District 1199 have reached a new three-year contract agreement for the hospital's unionized employees, according to a Herald Star report.

The contract includes annual wage increases and improved health and safety provisions, according to the report. The new agreement is effective Oct. 1.

Negotiations went smoothly, especially compared to the negotiation three years ago. "I think the best way to characterize it would be to remember three years ago, when we had a lot of issues reaching what we considered a fair and equitable contract," an SEIU representative said in the report.

"The relationship between the hospital and the union is one we value greatly and one which has experienced great strides in the past several months," a hospital spokeswoman told the Herald Star.
