Union Nurses Snub Northside Medical Center Contract Offer

Unionized nurses at Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio, have rejected what the hospital called its final contract offer, according to a WKBN report.

The contract offer included a 2.5 percent pay raise and "voluntary furlough days," or the opportunity for nurses to voluntarily stay home on days when staffing levels are adjusted, according to the report. Those voluntary furloughs were one of the main issues the nurses had with the contract, WKBN reported.

In addition to voting to turn down the contract, the union also voted to authorize a 10-day strike notice.

Northside Medical Center has accused Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association of engaging in "regressive bargaining," according to the report. Additionally, the hospital has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the union, according to WKBN.

Last week, Northside Medical Center announced it would lay off 77 union and non-union employees.
