A healthcare workers union has launched TV ads criticizing budget cuts proposed by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R), according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
SEIU Healthcare Illinois and Indiana began airing 30-second ads Monday, the day before the June 30 expiration of contracts that represent 57,000 child care and home healthcare workers.
The union plans to rotate two ads "that tell personal stories of disabled and elderly Illinois residents who want to remain in their homes," according to the report. The union claims Gov. Rauner is threatening mass layoffs and an end to services to tens of thousands of vulnerable seniors, people with disabilities, aging veterans, children and working families.
Gov. Rauner has launched his own TV ads targeting Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan in response to the SEIU ads.
Catherine Kelly, a spokeswoman for Gov. Rauner's office, said, "Illinois' fiscal crisis is due to Speaker Madigan and the legislators he controls overspending taxpayer dollars for years, while catering to government insiders and the political class. Gov. Rauner's Turnaround Agenda will free up resources and help grow the economy to protect middle class families and the most vulnerable."
